Slopestyle Jumps

Last night we did a rebuild in the Slopestyle on Front Valley. The groomers came in early and stayed late, and the day crew have been flat out this morning fine tuning the new features. As I’ve said before in this blog terrain often dictates design. For instance our location has three good natural landings that allow us to make bigger jumps with longer landings. In the flatter section after the first jump we built a true table a couple weeks ago. After last night’s effort we now have a three jump line that goes 30 foot curve jump step down, 40 foot true table top and finishing with a 45 foot step down. At the bottom jump pad we built a 6m Cannon box and will build it into another jump once we have more snow so we can have our usual quad jump line.
We also rebuilt our jib line by adding a few new features and relocating some others. The jib line starts with an 8m down Yard rail, then our 10m Rainbow rail, which was refurbished this summer. Next is Dougies’ Flat Down combo box which we changed to a 6m flat X 9m down, followed by our 9m down Donkey rail. We widened the park at the bottom now that we have more runs open and Front Valley is not as busy, so we put in a banked 6m “C” box to flow around the rock where we then put in a 6m Up / Down rail. We still have a bit more space so tonight we hope to put in the 10m “S” rail next to the Stall Ball.
Thanks to the new snow that we got recently, we have now opened the Coca-Cola Leichhardt Park for the first time this season. It’s geared more for the beginner / intermediates and has 4 boxes and 4 rollers. The line starts with a 3m Dance Floor box, then two 3m boxes in a row finishing with our 8m ledge box. The Blue Cow park is still rolling and the Yabby Rider Cross course had a rebuild yesterday with a new roller and berm to add to the mix.
The weather has moved in and it’s snowing lightly so hopefully it keeps up.
Cheers, Adam

Cheers man,
i really respect the thought and resources you guys put into it. Especially the jumps. They are always by far the best and safest jumps in australia. I’m always more happy hitting your 45+ footers, than i am hitting some of the 20-30 footers at some of your competitors resorts.
Keep it up,
peace

Thanks WL,
Those natural rolls on Front Valley really help out for landing length. We also added a 9m box and an 8m “T” box in Slopestyle last night, hope you like them.

Hey Rob,
On Friday we have the NSW Ski Cross Championships that will be held in the Front Valley Slopestyle. It’s slated to go from 8 AM to 3 PM, but if it finishes early we’ll open it back up to the public. During the school holidays we had the Interschool Boarder Cross event in there and the racers were so happy with the set up that it was decided to build the course for this next event there as well. On Friday night we will rebuild the jib line and add some new features for Saturday. We also have the Leichardt park, Blue Cow park and the Yabby rider cross going.
Sorry bud, just wanted to make sure you knew about Slopestyle before you got here.
Cheers, Adam

Hey Adam,
awesome what you guys are doing with the park this season. I only get to go down a few times a season and fusion blog has been very helpful with park information,,, one small favor to ask. could u upload some photos of the parks/new features?
anyways heading down this fri cant wait to c what the new setup looks like

if theres only going to be jibs on front valley for saturday, are you guys going to put some jumps into leichhart? what jibs are you thinking of putting in on front valley?
awesome job so far btw, all the parks have been sweet, and you guys have really been mixing it up this season. so good!

Hey Adam,
congrats on the park perisher has finally come up with the goods though does suck about it getting knocked down for the ski races this Friday.
By wat you have said I’m assuming the the 3 jump line will be staying and the cannon box and stall ball aswell and that you will be just removing the jib line for the races, correct?? And personally i don’t see a need for you to be playing with the jib line when you take it out you shoul just put it back in exactly how it Is maybe replace the rainbow with the s-rail or another box combo and maybe make the c-box a tad higher an also remove te first flat box for a kink as the new jib line has only been in for a week and people are still enjoying it soooo much and think it’s just a bit early to completely change it up so soon especially since you did such a good job like there’s an 8 hit jib line all in a row it’s amazing and the best jib line I’ve sen in perisher in my 3 years and just don’t want you guys too knock it down and not put back in such a good setup I think you should just leave slopestyle how it is for like another 10 days-2 weeks and just concentrate on leichardt atm anyways that’s just my opinion
Thanks.

Hey Adam,
many people have said this in previous posts and i agree that you should build a beginner park on front valley to avoid collisions in the large
jump and rail line. Other resorts that have a similar setup to Perisher are Mammoth, Northstar and Big White. They all have a small park next to
the large park and i have never seen any close calls or crashes in those parks.
you cant really blame the novice rider as most of the time they just don’t know any better and with new riders every week and weekend its hard to educate everyone about park etiquette.
Make the park fun so the beginners want to ride them and not jump off the side of the rail takeoffs, a mix of small rails, boxes, rollers and jumps in a line away from the larger stuff would be great and safer for everyone.
With that rail line rebuild could you put 12 features in the line. Most are slow to medium speed features and it would be awesome to have a full line top to bottom of the park.
Thanks to the park crew this morning, there was a beginner snowboarder stuck on the unload section of Sturt t-bar and the park crew helped them out of the way so i didnt have to bail early or risk hitting them. You made my day better and im sure they were happy they didn’t get hit in the head by a flying T.

Hi There,
Could you please calm the second jump down, most people go around it. That would be great.

Pav,
Hey buddy, I tried to upload a photo to the last blog but I must be driving this computer wrong. I’ll speak to our IT dept. tomorrow. We are now doing a “Best of the Week” park video that is uploaded to Youtube and also the Pop Magazine 3CS Park Page. The first one went online yesterday, check it out and tell us what you think.
Cheers, Adam

Hugh,
I think you might of missunderstood, we pulled out a few jibs for the Ski Cross and left all the jumps and then added the jibs last night. We put everything back to how it was since it was going real good, except for the 8m down rail that we replaced with the 11m Flat Down rail. It’s the first time this season for the F/D so hope you like it.
Thanks, Adam

Paul,
Thanks for the comments, yeah we were pretty happy with the jib line as well so we only changed the 8m down rail for the 11m F/D rail. We have an Interschools boarder cross comp on Wednesday / Thursday so we’ll probably take the jibs out on Tuesday and then rebuild the park on Thursday night for Friday. If you have any suggestions let us know. Leichardt park may see a new rail tonight, and then if we get more snow we’ll continue to expand a line down the right side.
Thanks Buddy, Adam

Thanks for the suggestion the boys talked about that last Wednesday and did it that night.
Thanks, Adam

Hey adam,
park is sick u guys r doing a good job.
i had a thought for the table top tho. it is a nice change of pace but it is a bit difficult to hit as a normal jump or to use to set up (go switch) into the 3rd.
An i dea would be to turn it into the step up they had last year but to make it bigger. It is good for learning new things without the higher risk and can be used more effectivly as a set up jump for the 3rd.
Just a thought is all
Cheers.

Laws,
Hey buddy thanks for the feedback, we were talking about the step up but decided to go with the table / hipper. On thursday night we’re going to have a look at building the 4th jump if the weather allows so we’ll have a closer look at the first three jumps to keep the flow and provide good set up. We’ll see how we go.
Thanks, Adam

Hey Adam,
I finally got out there for a shredd the past 4 days after being out hurt fo about 10 days and the jib line is awesome (except maybe the flat down) Been loving the first tall box and rainbow just wondering wat changes if any you are planning on making to the jib line with the rebuild I’ve heard that the yard rail may be going back in and that the flat down box may be going out which sounds good just hope you replace it with another box combo set up like a up flat or an up gap down would be rad too would love to see the cannon stay even if the 4th jump gets put in (dunno if that is possible) as it’s been a hit with slot of people in the park.
Anywho thanks.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:10 am
The first tall box could maybe be a tad longer like a 9m or sumfen

Hi everyone,
I’m going to perisher in 2 weeks, and curious as to which terrain parks have the smaller jumps? I hear alot about the big jumps in the playstation park, but nothing about the smaller parks. Does leichardt have any jumps, or just jibs? I’m looking for around 15ft etc.
Cheers
July 31st, 2010 at 6:50 pm
do different countries measure jumps differently? what is the standard of measuring the size of a jump?
i did a 30 ft one in NZ which definately felt more than the 45 ft at perisher (although i landed just 1 m down the lip).
p.s. dont know much about jump jargon.

Alex,
Hey buddy Right now Leichardt has one 10 footer and there’s a similar one at the Blue Cow park as well. One thing that is new this year is the Yabby rider cross course near mid station of the Perisher Quad Express. It’s a bunch of banked turns and rollers with a 10 foot table top at the bottom, it’s real fun and has been super popular. Last night Matt our grooming manager built a little mini halfpipe off the side of it. It doesn’t have vert walls or anything mainly just a chance for people new to pipes to get used to riding transitions. We have a cat in Leichardt right now as I’m writing this scratching for snow to see what else we can build there. With the coming snow Leichardt will be our priority to get some more features for the intermediates and beginners. Check back in 2 weeks and I can give you a detailed list of what we have in there so you know what to look forward to.
Cheers, Adam

Sbar,
With jumps we always measure from lip of take off to a metre or so past the knuckle of the landing. So if it’s a 30 footer you know if you go 30′ that you’ll be sweet. That’s how we always did it when I was building parks in the states and I would think that would be pretty universal. That being said jumps may get smaller or bigger just through nightly grooming or snowfalls that’s why it’s always important to scope you’re line when you first enter the park. Just because a jump was 45 feet the day before and you were making it easy in the afternoon slush it doesn’t mean that you can straightline at it first thing in the morning when it’s icy and fast and expect the same results. You always see the real good riders first thing in the morning doing a couple laps testing speed and side slipping up take offs to warm up and check the jumps. It’s a good habit to get into.
Have fun out there, Adam
