Top Tips for Your First Day at Perisher

Headed to Perisher for the first time? Whether you're a first-timer to the snow or a seasoned snowsports lover looking to explore a new mountain, your first day can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. Perisher is the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, with four interconnected resort areas: Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes, and Guthega. To make the most of your experience, here are some top tips to ensure a smooth and fun first day on the slopes.

Plan Your Arrival & Transport

Perisher is only accessible by Skitube from Bullocks Flat or by driving up to the resort. If you’re driving, be aware that all vehicles must carry snow chains (except AWD/4WDs) and that NSW National Park entry fees apply. It is also important to note that parking at Perisher is extremely limited, especially during peak periods

Many guests opt to use Skitube, which is a safe and stress-free way to travel to Perisher and Blue Cow.

Tip 1: If visiting during peak periods, we recommend familiarising yourself and your crew with Peak Snow Days to ensure your experience at Perisher is as seamless as possible.

Tip 2: If you're catching Skitube, we recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance to save time at Bullocks Flat.

Organise Lift Access, Lessons, & Rentals in Advance

Don’t waste time waiting when you could be ripping in! Pre-book your lift tickets or Passes, lessons, and gear rentals online before arriving. Perisher offers ski and snowboard rentals at multiple locations, including Bullocks Flat, Perisher Centre, and Smiggin Holes.

Tip 1: Lift tickets and Passes will be loaded onto a reusable Mountain Access Card and can be collected from any lift ticket collection point across the resort, including from The Station in Jindabyne and from Bullocks Flat Skitube Terminal.

Tip 2: Ski and snowboard gear rentals can be picked up from one of the three convenient Perisher Sports locations from 2pm the day before your booking begins, meaning you'll hit the ground running (or sliding) on the first official day of your visit!

Dress for the Conditions

Like all mountain environments, the weather at Perisher can be unpredictable and often vastly different from down in Jindabyne. Wear layered clothing, including a waterproof jacket and pants, thermal base layers, gloves, and a helmet. Goggles are highly recommended, especially in snowy or windy conditions.

Tip 1: The weather can change quickly, so check the forecast before you go and be prepared for everything from bluebird days to full-on blizzards.

Tip 2: Forgotten something? Perisher proudly stocks plenty of base and mid layers, as well as outerwear in our retail stores so you’re always ready to take on the mountain in ultimate comfort.

Know Your Terrain & Start Easy

Perisher has over 3,000 acres of explorable terrain, so it can be easy to lose your way or end up on a run that’s beyond your ability if you're not familiar with the resort. If you're just starting out or an early beginner, we recommend starting out at Smiggin Holes where you’ll find gentle slopes and great beginner-friendly lifts.

Tip: Familiarise yourself with Perisher's four resort areas, trail maps, and terrain prior to your trip.

Take a Lesson

If it's your first time skiing or snowboarding, a lesson with one of Perisher Snowsports School's qualified instructors is the best way to build confidence and learn proper technique. Even if you’ve been before, a refresher lesson can help you get comfortable faster.

Tip: Perisher Snowsports Schools offers First Timer Lessons & Packages straight out of Smiggin Holes to have you sliding and stopping confidently in no time!

Be Aware of Mountain Etiquette & Safety

Familiarise yourself with the Alpine Responsibility Code - stay in control, give way to those below you, and be mindful to only stop in spots clearly visible to downhill traffic. Always follow signs and lift attendants’ instructions.

Tip: If you’re unsure where to go, ask a Perisher  or lift operator, they’re always happy to help!
